That was the reaction of former Eskom Group CEO Matshela Koko in the state capture investigation Tuesday when he was told that an email address he thought belonged to the chairman of the board, Ben Ngubane, was actually the partner’s. Gupta commercial, Salim Essa.
He told the investigation that Eskom’s former head of legal and compliance affairs, Suzanne Daniels, had given him the email address, which she said was Ngubane’s personal email account.
Koko sent a series of emails to the account during 2015, attaching information about Eskom.
The leader of the tests, Pule Seleka, told Koko that it had been established during Daniels’ disciplinary hearing that the email address [email protected] belonged to Essa.

Koko said Daniels gave her the email address upon her return to Eskom after her suspension was lifted, when she had been appointed company secretary and was working in the Ngubane office.
“Ms. Daniels gave me the email address and said, ‘You need to keep the president informed.’
Koko said that none of the emails she sent greeted Ngubane by name, as she never did. He said it was not unusual for Eskom board members to use private email addresses.
Koko took the stand for the third time yesterday, but only in the late afternoon. He will be called back, at a date yet to be set, to answer more questions about the emails and transactions between Eskom and Tegeta.
He told the query that it did not matter whether the email account belonged to Essa or not: “What matters to me is that if that email address belongs to an external party, it is a serious security breach for me. That worries me “.
He claimed not to know that he was communicating with a third party, outside of Eskom.
Former Eskom CFO Anoj Singh is due to give testimony on Wednesday.
