If it weren’t obvious earlier, Liverpool sure I need centrals in January.
The Reds are already without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the foreseeable future due to separate knee injuries.
But another central defender in and out of the treatment room at the Axa Training Center is Joel Matip.
The Cameroonian international appears to be taking a short-term hit every other game for Liverpool and was injured again in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.
Matip was injured at the hour mark to be replaced by Rhys Williams and the German coach has revealed that he will not know the full extent of the problem until today, but said he does not look “too good” at the moment.
Klopp told Liverpool’s official website: “Joel told me that he felt something on his adductor and that’s obviously not very good. I’m not sure how bad it is now, but it was bad enough that I had to leave the field. I’ll get the rest of the information tomorrow. “
The good news is that we are about to enter the January transfer window, which means Liverpool can and will likely strengthen their central defense options.
Losing his top three central defenders is potentially devastating and Klopp, whose team faces Newcastle United on Wednesday, is probably only one injury away from Fabinho from total disaster.
One thing’s for sure now is that as good as he is, the Premier League champions simply can’t trust Matip, who makes £ 100,000 a week in Merseyside, and failing to reinforce that area could be a huge mistake.
