  • Zane Kilian’s request for bail in a case in which he is charged with the murder of the Anti-Gang Unit detective, Lt. Col. Charl Kinnear, has been postponed again.
  • The prosecutor in the case is in isolation Covid-19.
  • Kilian will apply for bail on December 8.

The long-awaited bail request from Charl Kinnear murder defendant Zane Kilian was delayed again because the prosecutor had to go into isolation from Covid-19.

During brief proceedings at Bellville Regional Court on Tuesday, prosecutor Blane Lazarus said his colleague, Greg Wolmarans, was unable to attend after he was identified as a contact for a colleague who contracted the coronavirus. Wolmarans is isolating himself to see if he develops symptoms of Covid-19.

The Western Cape health department is on high alert after it recently declared the Garden Route a Covid-19 hotspot, warning that the Cape Metro could be in the same position soon.

Kilian appeared in court with his glasses placed on his now shaved head, exposing his colorful head tattoos. The courthouse doors were once again guarded by specialist police officers, who rested their hands near the downward-pointing gun triggers.

The request for bail was postponed until December 8 and Kilian is in custody.

News24 reported Tuesday that there was a shooting outside the Highlands North home of a witness in the Kinnear case, which is based in Johannesburg, on Monday night.

The witness is alleged to have supplied the mobile phone technology used to track or “ping” the location of the mobile phones.

On Tuesday, Kilian was expected to give insight into his side of the story and say how he intends to advocate for the charges. Some details of the “ping” service you used, how you got it, and why you got it were also expected to be made public.

Last week, Kilian’s lawyer said his client was searching for drugs at a pharmacy at the time of Kinnear’s murder on September 18.

This was after it was discovered that Kinnear’s phone had been secretly tracked.

In a separate case, Kilian also faces one count of attempted murder along with four others for a shooting at the home of defense attorney William Booth in April.

Kilian, Kauther Brown, Kim Smith, Ibrahim Deare and Riyaad Gasant appeared in Cape Town Magistrates Court in connection with the shooting on Monday.

Kilian worked as a private investigator in Gauteng and was brought to the Western Cape for the Kinnear case after his arrest. Then he joined the Booth case.
