CAPE TOWN – Zane Killian, the man arrested for his alleged role in the murder of Detective Charl Kinnear, denied on Friday he was involved in the murder.

Amid tight security, Killian made his third appearance in Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court.

He was arrested in Gauteng last month.

Kinnear, a detective with the Anti-Gang Unit, was shot outside his home several weeks ago.

Armed police officers took Killian to the dock. He faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and illegal interception of communications.

The State alleges that Killian tracked Kinnear’s cell phones between March and September.

Eric Breyer of the defense presented two documents to the court as proof that Killian was a certified private investigator who was allowed to conduct surveillance.

“The defense is very disappointed with the State because in the first appearance here, which was 17 days ago, the State promised to seek an alternate court. We have not yet been appointed or assigned a regional court, but we hope that by next Wednesday we can do so. ”

The defense also said that Killian did not conspire to kill the police officer.

Due to security concerns, Killian’s bail offer will be heard in a different court, but he will have to return to Bishop Lavis Court next week, the same place a prosecutor had raised security concerns for.
