CAPE TOWN – A man convicted of the rape and murder of a Beaufort West woman has been sentenced to 25 effective years behind bars.

Jacobus Plaaitjies worked as handyman for Anthea Thopps, 30, and knew her and her family well.

He has received a sentence of 25 years for murder, 25 years for rape, 10 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances and five years for burglary with intent to rob and theft.

The sentences will be executed at the same time.

The defendant had admitted to smoking tik and mandrax with friends and when he needed money to buy more drugs, he remembered that Thopps had an amplifier that he could steal and sell.

Plaaitjies broke into the woman’s house through the kitchen.

He then dragged her into the living room where he strangled her until she lost consciousness.

Later, the victim was raped and a cord was tied around her neck.

Plaaitjies escaped with two cell phones and her handbag in which she found R200 with which she bought more drugs.

He burned the bag and the rest of its contents while using drugs with friends in a nearby field.

One mobile phone was sold for R100 and the other was discarded.
