Former PSL CEO and referee Ace Ngcobo has asked the league’s disciplinary committee to take action against Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
Khune was involved in a no-ball incident with Maritzburg United forward Judas Moseamedi during Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 win over The Team of Choice in the MTN8 quarterfinal.
Khune, the former starting goalkeeper for the Bafana Bafana, has been charged with “violent conduct” after he swept Moseamedi immediately after conceding a goal on Saturday afternoon.
The Khune Incident
Ace Ngcobo calls for suspension of Itu
Several players received suspensions for violent conduct at PSL last season and Ace Ngcobo believes that the Itumeleng Khune incident should justify similar punishment.
“As soon as the ball is out of play, it is violent behavior. It doesn’t matter if you commit it with your little finger, your fist, your head or your foot, “Ngcobo told Extra Time about Khune.
“Violent conduct is punishable by suspension regardless of whether or not a red card is shown during the game. That is irrelevant, violent conduct should be punished with a suspension.
“If the referee has failed it that day. We have a duty as organizing authorities (the PSL) to make sure that an incident like that is referred to the disciplinary committee so that the appropriate measures are taken ”.
Kaizer Chiefs will undoubtedly be sweating at the prospect of Khune being suspended. Daniel Akpeyi missed the action this weekend due to passport problems, while Bruce Bvuma was appointed to the Amakhosi bench.
Khune played just two league games last season due to ongoing injury struggles and will be destroyed if an unnecessary suspension hampers his return to action this season. Next, Gavin Hunt and his men turn their attention to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, whom they face in their first DStv Premiership game this weekend.
