Justin Gaethje has crashed into the top end of the UFC lightweight division after fully dominating Tony Ferguson to secure the interim lightweight title at UFC 249.
Gaethje stopped Ferguson in the fifth and final round after playing with bookmaker favorites throughout the fight.

Justin Gaethje was the underdog on betting in his showdown with Tony Ferguson, but he arranged a masterclass to ensure victory.
It only makes sense for him to face Khabib Nurmagomedov next for the undisputed lightweight title.
Khabib had to withdraw from his scheduled fight with Ferguson after travel restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus meant that he was unable to leave his homeland of Russia.
That meant for the fifth time that Khabib and Ferguson were out and Gaethje was the man who was ready to enter the gap.
After his impressive victory, called an annoying victory, Gaethje revealed that he was only focused on taking on Nurmagomedov.

Khabib had two tweets for Gaethje in response.
The first read “no comment” before Khabib decided, well, he did have a comment.
“@Justin_Gaethje It was so awesome, congratulations. Fight very smart, ”Khabib tweeted.
It seems that having Khabib and Gaethje facing each other for the undisputed title would make sense in the world.
Conor McGregor has been making noises about how he wants to face Khabib, and prior to this loss, UFC legend Chuck Liddell believed that the UFC had to fight between Ferguson, Khabib and McGregor.
But now, Gaethje has been inserted into the mix and with travel restrictions still in place, it could be many months before we fight Khabib.

Even if McGregor could travel, it is rumored that he could focus on a lucrative trilogy fight with Nate Diaz as he waits for the winner of Gaethje and Khabib to emerge.
Gaethje represents a proposal similar to Khabib that McGregor made when he tried his luck against The Eagle in 2018.
He is a trade puncher and Khabib is a world class fighter, so would the result be different?
