While it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Gavin Hunt will replace Ernst Middendorp as the Kaizer Chiefs head coach for the new season last week, media reports suggest otherwise with Adel Amrouche’s name also mentioned this week.
The Glamor Boys are desperate to find a suitable coach to recapture the glory days after five full seasons without a big piece of silver.
The last time the Chiefs lifted a trophy was when Stuart Baxter was in charge in 2015 and since then, things have taken a downward spiral under three different managers.
Steve Komphela succeeded Baxter, but resigned in April 2018 following the club’s semi-final loss to the Free State Stars at the Nedbank Cup.
Chiefs then appointed Giovanni Solinas as head coach for the 2018-19 season, but the Italian mentor was fired after 21 games with seven wins, seven losses and seven losses in all competitions.
Middendorp came in to try and steer the ship in that direction, and on his return, he was unable to do so as the Soweto giants finished off the top and lost a Nedbank Cup final to the minnows and the NFD-side TS Galaxy in May 2019.
The club kept faith in him and allowed him to have a full season – the Chiefs had a very promising season as they fought for the title until the last day of the season.
However, that was not enough to appease Amakhosi’s millions of fans and management, especially after sitting at the top of the record for 13 months, but he still couldn’t end up getting a win against Baroka on September 5.
The Chiefs subsequently lost the league to triplet winners Mamelodi Sundowns and management felt the German mentor was not the right man for the job going forward.
But that it does objective Do you know the Amakhosi coaching saga?
A week ago, objective confirmed that Hunt was ready to take over as head of the club and that talks were ongoing between the two parties.
This is despite Hunt’s denial that he was not in talks with the Amakhosi hierarchy about taking on the job, saying he was in Cape Town to spend time with his family.
Again, last weekend, media reports suggested that Hunt was in pole position to replace Middendorp with Doctor Khumalo and Kwanele Kopo touted as his two possible assistants.
Hunt returned to Johannesburg on Sunday to possibly finalize his proposed deal with Chiefs, as the only thing delaying the deal was the length of his contract and the salary package.
However, it emerged on Monday that the Chiefs were throwing their net all over the place with Amrouche as the big favorite to get Hunt to the job.
Hunt is not linked to any team, while Amrouche has a contract with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) for the next two years.
Also, Amrouche is conducting his Caf Pro licensing classes in Belgium, but he could be at Naturena next week to meet the Amakhosi bosses.
Amrouche, however, will have to speak to the BFA hierarchy before he can accept any job or he could simply quit the job he got in August 2019 to make things less complicated for both himself and the Chiefs if the deal is Okay.
Chiefs approached the 52-year-old Algerian mentor to replace Solinas, but he turned down the opportunity. He could have replaced Midddendorp after the 2018-19 season, but he refused because he “ didn’t want to look like someone who stabs other coaches in the back. ”
At the time, Middendorp was still hired by Amakhosi for two seasons. As things stand now, Amakhosi’s coaching job appears to be between Hunt and Amrouche even though Benni McCarthy and Baxter are also tied to a possible trade to Naturena.
