The two coaches were believed to be in the running for Amakhosi’s job, but the club boss said he had always been on the lookout for the former Bidvest Wits coach.

Kaizer Chiefs President Kaizer Motaung is a happy man now that Gavin Hunt is finally coaching his team.

Speaking after Hunt’s appointment, Motaung said he still doesn’t understand why the 56-year-old took so long to join Naturena’s side.

Hunt’s “impressive pedigree” is what Motaung said drew the club to him, as well as his availability after the Bidvest Wits sale, making him the obvious choice.

“I don’t understand why it took him so long to be here. The man has a very impressive pedigree and that’s why we looked for him. Fortunately, he was available thanks to the sale of Bidvest Wits,” Motaung said according to an audio recording released by the club.

Motaung said the negotiations between the Chiefs and Hunt passed in silence after Ernst Middendorp’s departure.

And he also referred to reports that Amakhosi was also in talks with Botswana’s head coach, Adel Amrouche, saying the reports were not true.

“The negotiations have gone very smooth after we relieved the previous coach of his responsibilities. We are aware that there was speculation in Botswana, that is not true. The important thing now is that the eagle has landed,” Motaung continued.

The 75-year-old owner further revealed that immediate expectations in the new era will be how the team performs under Hunt’s tutelage, adding that he hopes the new coach will mark his authority and take control of turning things around.

“The immediate expectations will be seen in the way the team performs. You must exercise your authority. We know you are a very ambitious fighter and coach,” he added.

Motaung also sympathized with the millions of Amakhosi fans who were left disappointed and heartbroken after watching his beloved team lose the league title to Mamelodi Sundowns on the final day of the season.

However, he believes they have a winning coach in Hunt and has urged the club’s loyalists to join Moroka Swallows’ former mentor.

“I feel sorry for the fans that we are going through this period and the pain of losing the title in the last 30 minutes of the season, having led all the way. But now we have a winning coach and they must support him,” “Motaung concluded.
