Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt was left “embarrassed” with his team after their shocking Nedbank Cup loss to Richards Bay.
The Kaizer Chiefs suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to the GladAfrica Championship’s Richards Bay FC in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 on Sunday afternoon.
Gavin Hunt’s men headed into this afternoon’s clash as firm favorites, yet the Richards Bay minnows sent them off in dramatic fashion.
Hunt ’embarrassed’ by Kaizer Chiefs
“It’s embarrassing. On a personal level, I don’t think I’ve ever lost to a First Division team in 26, 27 years in football,” Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt told SuperSport after the game.
“But they have a life preserver. We had many opportunities, but you must take advantage of them. When you play against a team like Richard’s Bay you have to score first, but they have the advantage.
“We made two serious mistakes at the rear, but in saying I have to take a good look at the Kaizer Chiefs team. You can’t fool yourself with these things. There’s a lot … I don’t want to say too much.
“We had numerous chances in the first half, but we didn’t make the last ball count and even when we put the men down we still had numerous chances and you have to do better.”
The fringe players agreed with me
Gavin Hunt gave rare starts to Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya and Siphelele Ntshangase, however Kaizer Chiefs’ mentor felt his decision to put them out of the game for weeks was justified after their performances.
“You give some people a chance here and there and obviously this (his performance) agrees with me. And then we make the changes, but obviously the one or two that came need to improve. ”Hunt added.
“The Kaizer Chiefs have to work a little harder. We have to improve situations. We have to work a little more. We just want the ball to be upright the entire time. We turned the ball over in the right-back position, we kicked the kid straight and he turned and went the other way and you look at situations and think ‘Why is it there when it shouldn’t be there? Same player for both goals.
“I know what we have in front of us. I know what I have ahead of me at Kaizer Chiefs, so we have to be better. It has been that way from the beginning. We have to have more legs in the team, you know? A little more mobility. All these kinds of things. But we have to get over it and we have to push ourselves, turn the corner and go again. “
There is nothing easier for Kaizer Chiefs with his next opponents being the Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca. They travel to Morocco to face Wydad in their first match of the group stage of the CAF Champions League on Saturday night.
