Kaizer Chiefs owner Motaung praises Mosimane and Hunt

The Amakhosi owner has showered the two local coaches with praise for how they equipped themselves with the knowledge to be where they are.

Kaizer Motaung has explained why most local coaches fight at PSL clubs, including the Kaizer Chiefs.

Motaung’s response to a question posed by a fan as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations was that coaches must equip themselves with the knowledge more than anything to be able to handle the training pressure at PSL.

“It is not just for Kaizer Chiefs [where local coaches struggle] but all the teams in the league. It’s not really difficult, but it’s about knowledge, “Motaung told the Amakhosi website.

“Some of our local coaches need to work harder in terms of gaining knowledge.”

The 75-year-old reserved a special mention for Pitso Mosimane and Gavin Hunt, who work for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, respectively.

He said that more coaches can learn one or two things from the couple who are veteran coaches and continue to flourish wherever they go.

“We have seen the work that coaches like Pitso Mosimane and Gavin Hunt have done to improve,” added Motaung.

“We need more of that kind of commitment from all of our local coaches.”

Mosimane and Hunt are the two most successful coaches still involved in professional soccer in South Africa, each winning four league titles. The only other two coaches with four PSL titles are Gordon Igesund and the late Ted Dumitru.

Mosimane, Hunt and Igesund are the only coaches born in South Africa to have lifted the coveted trophy since the start of the PSL in 1996.

And for the Chiefs, foreign coaches at Dumitru and Stuart Baxter were needed to win all four league titles that have his name in the last 24 years.

In 2015, Motaung named Steve Komphela as the club’s head coach, his first local coach since Trott Moloto in 1994.

Things didn’t go as planned, as Komphela, now with Golden Arrows, was unable to deliver trophies at Naturena until her forced resignation in April 2018.

Motaung then replaced Komphela with Italian mentor Giovanni Solinas, who was fired a few months later and his place was taken by current coach Ernst Middendorp.

Middendorp appears to have woken up the sleeping giant as the Chiefs currently top the PSL rankings and have done so since August 2019.
