Amakhosi will look to ease his domestic woes with a better start in Africa, where he will begin his campaign against continental rookies.
Kaizer Chiefs will begin their 2020/21 Caf Champions League campaign in the preliminary round against Cameroonian champions PWD Bamenda.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions Mamelodi Sundowns have received a goodbye in the preliminary stage and are waiting in the first round to face the winner between the Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana or the US Zilimadjou of Comoros.
The Chiefs will visit PWD Bamenda for the first time on the weekend of November 27-29, before hosting their opponents on the weekend of December 4-6.
While the Amakhosi have had a rocky start to the season, they could be envisioning rejuvenating themselves against their Cameroonian opponents, whose only appearance in Africa was a second-round outing of the 2004 Caf Confederation Cup.
Bamenda qualified for this season’s Champions League after claiming his first league title from Cameroon Elite One last season which, however, ended prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
If the Chiefs beat Bamenda, they will face Angolan champion Primeiro Agosto in the first round as they look to reach the group stage with Gavin Hunt, who led Bidvest Wits to the mini-league stage of the Caf Confederation Cup last season.
It would be a return to Africa for last season’s PSL runner-up Chiefs, who have recently entered the Champions League with little success.
Meanwhile, at the Confederation Cup, the Orlando Pirates will begin their run for a first continental title since 1995 in the first round after receiving a break from the preliminary stage.
The Buccaneers will play as the winner between SD Sagrada Esperanca of Angola and representatives of Eswatini yet to be confirmed.
The Pirates were Confederation Cup finalists in 2015 and return to this competition after finishing third in the PSL table last season.
Another South African participant in this competition Bloemfontein Celtic will face AS Maniema from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the preliminary round.
The Free State team will begin their away campaign on the weekend of November 27-29 and, if they pass this stage, they will face Rivers United of Nigeria or the Future Kings of Equatorial Guinea.
