Juventus is reportedly set to cash in on Cristiano Ronaldo next summer in a bid to cut costs and recoup some transfer funds.
The 35-year-old is signed to the club until 2022 but Juve has come to the conclusion that they will not offer him an extension beyond that date.
According to Spanish publication Sport Juve bosses now want to put Ronaldo up for sale at the end of the season so as not to lose him for nothing the following year.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is Juve’s biggest draw, but he has yet to help the club move closer to clinching a Champions League title.
That remains the key priority for Juve’s hierarchy, but Ronaldo’s exorbitant salary is becoming a burden on the club’s finances.
The Portuguese forward earns 31 million euros (28 million pounds) per season, more than five times more than the club’s second-highest-earning player, Paulo Dybala.
The economic impact of the coronavirus has accelerated Juventus’s desire to sell, as they feel the financial pressure as much as any other club.
They are hoping to recoup some of the £ 100 million they paid Real Madrid for his services in 2018, as well as taking it off the salary bill.
Where would a good next club be for Ronaldo? Express your opinion below.
Ronaldo has ambition to continue playing at the highest level beyond his 40th birthday if physical condition permits, but Juventus is not interested in retaining him longer than he is already signed, given his advanced age.
If Juventus are looking to get rid of Ronaldo, they would likely turn down a trade to China or MLS to stay in Europe.
PSG is at the front of the queue to try to get his signature if he leaves the Stadio delle Alpi, and the opportunity to test himself in another of the major European leagues would attract Ronaldo.
He has still been in good scoring form for his team, scoring six times in as many games this season, but was replaced with an ankle injury during his last outing against Lazio.
