Jurgen Klopp describes Liverpool’s changes and admits surprise at Barcelona’s ‘anger’

Jurgen Klopp admits that he rarely explains that he left someone out of Liverpool’s starting lineup, and was surprised to discover Gini Wijnaldum’s reaction to being defeated against Barcelona.

The Reds have been extremely successful lately, with a 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League and current holders of the European Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Much has depended on how Klopp has used his squad and how his players have adopted the regular rotation.

And the Reds boss has lifted the lid on how his players have time to accept his selection decisions.

“Players generally know a day before the game, maybe even two days before a game, whether they play a game or not,” he said.

“I never stood in line at the hotel and showed it to them the first time. I want them to prepare for that and all that.”

“I treat them individually. That means a player who has played the last 20 games in a row and then is not playing, I still tell them.

“Normal rotation in a season when you have three games a week, on the front line or midfield where we change a lot, then I don’t explain it to the boys. I say that once before the season or a specific period in the season and then it’s clear.

“I have to judge the situation at the moment. The last match was intense for him, he cannot play or anything.”

Klopp Speaking to the Sky Sports Football Show, he also admitted that he had no idea that Wijnaldum was angry that he had been skipped by the team that started the Champions League semi-final lap against Barcelona last season.

The Dutchman made the confession after leaving the bench for the second half to score twice and inspire the Reds to a remarkable 4-0 victory after losing the first game at Camp Nou 3-0 a week earlier.

And Klopp said: “Later they told me that Gini Wijnaldum was really angry because he didn’t start. But I didn’t see him in training!

“I tell the guys that you don’t have to be happy, you just have to accept and then we can talk about it. No problem.”

“Before the game, we can’t. When I make a decision and a player comes looking for me, that shows me that the player doesn’t understand our situation.”

“The next game is always the most important thing, you have to respect that. If you don’t train better then, you may have problems.”

“But if you are not happy but you train well, come to my office, we can talk and I will explain. My door is always open.

“If I am friends with the player, believe me, around the day, I am friends with the starting XI and the others have some points to criticize if you ask them.”
