The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has referred a complaint to the Judicial Conduct Committee against Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng for his comments on the Covid-19 vaccine.

JSC Secretary Seal Chiloane confirmed to News24 that he had received a complaint against Mogoeng from the health advocacy organization, the African Alliance.

“We can confirm that the complaint will be forwarded to the Judicial Conduct Committee that deals with judges for further handling,” Chiloane said.

The African Alliance said it had filed a complaint following Mogoeng’s “false and dangerous vaccine claims.”

Addressing a government event in Tembisa last year, Mogoeng prayed that “if there is any vaccine that is from the devil, intended to infuse triple six into people’s lives, intended to corrupt their DNA, Lord God Almighty that it be destroyed. by fire, in the name of Jesus. “

The founder and director of the African Alliance, Tian Johnson, said the comments by Mogoeng, who he has repeatedly defended, imply that the vaccines could be dangerous without a factual basis.

“By doing this, your statements, as a highly visible public official, undermine the public’s trust in scientifically proven, life-saving vaccines. Let’s be clear, vaccines are not made by the devil and they do not change their DNA.”

Johnson added that the real danger was that statements like Mogoeng’s lowered public confidence in vaccines and were damaging.

“The Chief Justice must be aware that national regulators such as [the] The Health Products Regulatory Authority of South Africa exists to ensure that products like vaccines are safe, effective and of high quality.

“Today hundreds of people will die from Covid-19. When South Africa has access to a vaccine, we will need as many people as we can to receive those vaccines,” he said.

The African Alliance said it believed that the more people were vaccinated, the less chance they had of becoming infected with the virus.

Johnson added that the misinformation about vaccines only put that goal further out of reach.

“By making unsubstantiated claims about vaccines, the African Alliance believes that Mogoeng acted in a manner inconsistent or inappropriate for a judicial officer and violated the Code of Judicial Conduct in relation to the Judicial Services Commission Act.

“We now ask the Judicial Conduct Committee to urgently review and process the complaint to protect public investments made in a Covid-19 vaccine. The African Alliance is also concerned that Mogoeng is just one of several prominent public leaders and political figures who they have sold misinformation during the outbreak, “he said.
