Members of the Jozini community gather in the street after an angry mob installed the car in which the alleged thieves were traveling.
Police are investigating murder and attempted murder cases after a group of angry Jozini residents used mafia justice against six people they allegedly caught breaking into the local school.
Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said that around midnight on Sunday, the KwaJobe community in Jozini saw two suspicious cars parked near the local elementary school.
“The community mobilized and managed to arrest a total of six suspects between 24 and 43 years old. The suspects were assaulted by members of the community and one of the 35-year-old suspects died at the scene.
“The other five suspects were turned over to the police with assault wounds. One of the suspects was found with a licensed firearm.
“The community set fire to the two vehicles that were used by the suspects. It was later established that the elementary school in KwaJobe was raided. The school’s fence was cut down and the gates were also damaged. Charges of murder, attempted murder, intentional damage to property and robbery were opened in Jozini SAPS, ”Mbele said.
He said the police received information about another car with unknown occupants that had fled the scene towards Mbazwana. Mbazwana police intercepted the vehicle with five occupants. Five computers, two flat-screen televisions, and burglary equipment were found in the car.
Mbele said the car’s occupants, ages 21 to 32, were arrested for theft and possession of burglary equipment.
“The investigation revealed that the computers were stolen from a school in Mbazwana. The suspects are alleged to have cut the fence. The police seized the vehicle for further investigation, ”said Mbele.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the community partnership in fighting crime. “While we appreciate the proactive action of the community, I also appeal to citizens not to break the law by assaulting suspects and destroying property required as evidence,” he said.
