The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) gave an update on Monday on current measures guiding the safe and effective implementation of COVID-19 vaccines in the country.

CAPE TOWN – Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Company is the first to apply for COVID-19 vaccine registration in South Africa.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) gave an update on Monday on the measures in place that guide the safe and effective deployment of COVID-19 vaccines in the country.
At least four coronavirus vaccine candidates are being evaluated in South Africa.
SAHPRA CEO Boitumelo Semete said: “We received an application, it was received Thursday night from J&J and we have started the review process.”
Semete explained that they have also had conversations with other pharmaceutical companies seeking to register their COVID-19 vaccine candidates with the regulatory body.
“We have had discussions prior to the presentations with them where we advised them on the data we would need as a regulator. Therefore, we really hope that this process that we have described and published on our website will provide the industry with sufficient information in terms of what is expected. “
Semete said it was important to provide the public with the assurance that the vaccines to be launched in South Africa would meet the principles of safety, quality and efficacy.
“It is important that all of us as regulators really give our citizens the comfort and confidence that any product that enters the market will be a quality product.”
