Cricket South Africa Acting Executive Director Pholetsi Moseki said the internal restructuring will result in the sad inevitability of job losses.
With the national cricket landscape shifting from six franchises to the original provincial structure that had 11 in 2004, but with 15 now, there will be fewer players signed for division one and two teams.
There is also the add-on of franchise personnel who will also be affected by the changes. Moseki said this was unavoidable, but that the parent body will provide as much support as possible to the franchises.
“There are personnel who will lose their jobs. It’s something that franchises have been working on and we discussed it with them. We promised that we will provide as much support as possible over the next year, ”Moseki said.
“Everyone knew that the structure was going to start this year. CSA will definitely be there to support and ensure that the breakdown is manageable. There will be people who will lose jobs at those levels. ”
This could also be extended to franchise coaches, as most senior provincial teams have their own coaching structures.
South African Cricketers Association Executive Director Andrew Breetzke said they don’t know what will happen to franchise coaches.
“I have no idea of the inner workings of what the franchises are doing with their coaches. I know this is a problem they are dealing with. We are not involved with the coaches, ”said Breetzke.
With the eight first division teams with 16 players signed, while the seven second division teams allowed 11, there will be a painful sacrifice of players.
Breetzke said that the change to the home system was going to bring problems, but that they are currently grappling with the complexities of the new system when it comes to hiring.
“When this issue was raised, it triggered a number of factors. These include the Memorandum of Understanding and contracting. It is true that there will be 75 fewer players signed and, as SACA, we will have to see how we handle them. It is important to note that the process of renegotiating the MoU on contracts and assignments is an ongoing and quite complicated process, ”said Breetzke.
“In any change to any structure, adding two teams and changing divisions will require franchise contracts and different allocation approaches. It will require players to have an exit option when it comes to a relegation scenario. That work is ongoing and there is a lot of work to be done before starting a new season.
