While uncertainty reigns over the South African rugby Covid-19 “escape clause”, the Bulls may claim a fruitful lockout after confirming the signing of Gio Aplon on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old perennial veteran is the latest high-profile acquisition for the Loftus-based franchise, following the re-signing of staunch Springbok Duane Vermeulen as well as experienced international hardhead capture Marcel van der Merwe.
Tiny but electrifying, Aplon is a trusted lieutenant to the Bulls’ director of rugby, Jake White, with whom he enjoyed a good relationship on the Japanese side Toyota Verblitz.
“The Bulls have always been a formidable force in the rugby world. I have always had great respect for the brand and what it has accomplished, and I am looking forward to racing at Loftus,” he said.
“Coach Jake has an amazing vision and plan for the team, and I am honored that he wants me as part of him. I hope the Bulls are proud.”
Aplon, who scored five attempts in 17 tests for the Springboks, is no stranger to Super Rugby, as he was a Stormers favorite before a six-year season abroad, which also included a successful affiliation with the French team of Grenoble.
The Hawston-born steering wheel may no longer be a spring chicken, but it’s also not sloppy and will provide wisdom and proven nous in a rear split that doesn’t exactly ooze the experience.
Willem Strauss, president of Blue Bulls, confirmed that Aplon will be used as a mentor.
“His role in developing potential superstars like (19-year-old youth star) Richard Kriel will be worth his weight in gold.”
The Bulls are also expected to announce the return of Arno Botha, a two-episode Springbok, who overcame a litany of injury problems to revive his career in Ireland in due course.
