A month after Matona left Eskom, he received a call confirming that Zuma wanted to see him.
Zuma, who was initially unavailable when Matona was expelled from Eskom, suddenly “showed remorse.”
“What he did say was that I got caught by spaghetti, those were his exact words,” Matona said, adding that she didn’t understand what Zuma meant.
“Then he told me that he would like me to go back to public service. I think he wanted to establish where my mental space was. I left the meeting, we never had a chance to speak again.”
He was asked if he believed that Zuma’s “remorse” could have indicated that he was involved in her departure from Eskom.
“I can confirm the remorse, but I can’t say if the remorse is a reflection that he may have been involved in my suspension,” he replied.
Three months after his meeting with Zuma, Matona was appointed chief secretary of the National Planning Commission, located in the presidency, where he still works.
The commission is prepared to hear Tsotsi’s evidence.
