Italian Lazio ready to spend money on Manchester United outcast

Manchester United have bought one and downloaded one so far this summer.

From Juan Sebastián Verón to Carlos Tevez and Ángel Di María to Sergio Romero, there has never been a long list of Argentine superstars who have graced Old Trafford’s sacred turf to date. If we turn the pages of history, we will find that only six Argentines have made the cut.

Some of them had a brilliant pedigree behind them (Di María, for example), while others made a name for themselves after joining the Diablos Rojos (like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Romero). Sometimes things have gone from bad to worse and they have not been able to replicate the expectations of the fans on the field. Yet they have proudly embraced Manchester’s red jersey and shown the courage to fight for the spots under the brightest spotlights of the ‘Theater of Dreams’.

Born and raised in La Plata, Argentina, Marcos Rojo is the fifth and one of the recent names on the coveted list of Argentines. During Louis van Gaal’s reign, Marcos Rojo joined the Manchester-based club for a € 20 million (£ 16 million) transfer fee from Sporting Lisbon.

As a professional, he had garnered many accolades in his days in Portugal. And therefore United devotees would want him to succeed at Old Trafford. He had that attitude of never saying die on the field and the agility to play both as a center back and as a left back.

Since joining the club, Rojo has suffered several injuries that have played an integral role in the devastation of his United career. Having made 122 appearances for the club in all competitions, he has helped the illustrious club win a plethora of titles, including a UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and FA Community Shield.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s emergence as the club’s coach has meant nothing good for the Argentine, as the 30-year-old joined his home team, Club Estudiantes de La Plata, last January on a mid-season loan. However, a thigh injury limited his participation to a single appearance at his kids’ club. And following the expiration of the deal, Red is reported to have returned to Manchester.

Although his body wanders the pavements of Manchester, his heart faithfully seeks movement outside the city. You may not be expecting that long now as reports from Tuttomercatoweb (via Teamtalk) suggest Italian Serie A’s SS Lazio are considering making a move for Marcos Rojo, who they reportedly believe could be a seasoned addition to the team.

The story also explains that Lazio wants to pay 8 million euros for the Argentine and that United could happily let the player leave the club.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are desperate to get rid of Rojo, as the player is understood to have nothing to do with the plans orchestrated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United are in the market to sign a center-back, and another veteran, Chris Smalling, is closer to returning to Rome. Despite United having more than a month left in the summer transfer window, the Premeir League is now less than two weeks away. And time is ticking.
