With a contract for another 18 months, the Frenchman will not offer long-term guarantees about his situation at the club.
Zinedine Zidane wants to “seize the moment” at Real Madrid, as he is not sure how long his reign at the Santiago Bernabéu will last.
The fourth anniversary of Zidane’s initial appointment at Madrid is approaching, but the head coach revealed last month that he was not discussing an extension to a contract that expires in 2022.
The Frenchman was asked before Saturday’s game against Celta de Vigo if another four years at Madrid, this time uninterrupted by a spell outside, could be in the cards.
However, unable to make promises during an extended stay, Zidane replied: “It costs you a lot, but it’s a great position here.
“I am lucky to say that I am the coach of Real Madrid and I take advantage of every moment. I cannot say a month, a year or four years. Life is about day to day.”
“That is what interests me: day to day, giving everything I can, in each training session, in each game. That’s what interests me.
“The rest? I don’t know what’s going to happen in a week. So we have to seize the moment.”
Zidane hopes to have added to his 11 major honors by the time he leaves, although this season’s La Liga title race is far from easy.
Defending champion Madrid can at least briefly beat Atletico Madrid if they beat Celta, against whom they are unbeaten in 12 in La Liga, but Zidane’s men have already played two more games than their city rivals.
It’s an advantage for Atleti for now, but the former Ballon d’Or winner isn’t overly concerned.
“Being the first means having the advantage, and that’s it,” Zidane explained. “We just have to keep going. We can’t control [Atleti being favourites].
“They have an advantage because they are first, and that’s it. Now there is a lot of talk about Atlético, because, as I said, they are first.
“But the good thing about this league, until the end, it will be an open league, as always. We’ll see.”
Despite their recent solid record against Celta, scoring in 28 consecutive La Liga games at home, their longest streak against any team, Madrid drew 2-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu last season.
Eighth-ranked Celta could draw against Madrid in consecutive games for the first time since May 2003.
