Israel is banning visitors from South Africa over Covid-19 concerns.

Israel said on Sunday it was banning entry to foreign nationals traveling from Britain, Denmark and South Africa after a new strain of coronavirus was detected in all three countries.

He also announced strict rules for Israelis returning home from those nations, saying they would be confined in army-run hotels that serve as quarantine centers, in a joint statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and the Health Ministry.

The prime minister summoned Israel’s so-called crown cabinet “for an urgent discussion on the discovery of the new strain of coronavirus in various countries,” according to the statement in Hebrew.

He said the panel approved “immediate action to prevent foreigners from entering Israel; at this stage from the UK, Denmark and South Africa.”

It also decided that Israelis returning home after a stay in those countries would be forced to quarantine in one of the empty hotels rented by the government at the start of the pandemic and run by the army’s civil defense corps.
