Is there a threat of earthquakes in the toilet?

At 12:27 a.m., a roar and a shaking were heard and felt as a 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck 47 kilometers off the coast of Saldanha Bay.

CAPE TOWN – Capetonians on Tuesday again asked questions about whether there was a threat of earthquakes.

At 00:27 a rumbling and trembling was heard and felt as a 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck 47 kilometers off the coast of Saldanha Bay.

In September, there was a 6.2 magnitude earthquake about 1,600 kilometers from the coast and smaller tremors around the Durbanville area, which were also felt by Cape Town residents.

Now, residents are once again considering whether they should be concerned about earthquakes, which are very rare in Cape Town.

The provincial government said it was not necessary and assured the public that the situation was being monitored.

There was no imminent threat to public safety, no reports of infrastructure damage or a tsunami warning on Tuesday.

Colin Diener from Disaster Management explained why residents can rest easy.

“The thing about South Africa: because we are in a stable continental area, our seismic waves can be felt over very large distances, unlike a region where there are large earthquake zones, so we feel these waves in very large areas “.

He said that if there was a major disaster, residents could call in some 130 highly-trained rescue technicians and activate three emergency response plans.

“One is our urban search and rescue, which allows our emergency services to respond to anything that involves the collapse of buildings, etc. we also have the hazardous materials response plan that would address the major release of major hazardous materials. ”

The third part is a mass casualty plan, which will help the health system manage large numbers of patients.
