President Cyril Ramaphosa declared parts of the Eastern Cape as hotspots, introducing stricter measures on the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
South Africans enjoying the fun of the holiday season when the country is mired in the throes of COVID-19 have had many worried.
The tourism industry and alcohol traders are concerned, as Ramaphosa’s fears will further restrict alcohol sales and possibly ban visits to the beach.
KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape normally see a lot of visitors to enjoy the beaches and officials would have to try to manage the busy period in those provinces.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about super-spread events, such as raves, which leave many infected with the virus.
However, many of those meetings were canceled.
Meanwhile, economists were concerned that with growth expected to contract by 8% this year, the country still needs to focus on keeping the economy alive.
