JOHANNESBURG – Political parties have described the call by Acting Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen for President Cyril Ramaphosa to end the national shutdown as irresponsible.

During a speech Friday, Steenhuisen said the country’s strategy for dealing with COVID-19 was flawed.

He called on Ramaphosa to reopen the economy or risk devastating consequences.

Steenhuisen believed that the blockade should end immediately, warning that the effects of not reopening the economy would be catastrophic.

His comments have been criticized by some political parties.

People’s Congress Dennis Bloem said it was pretty clear that DA was putting the economy above the lives of millions of citizens.

“We are surprised by the calls from the district attorney. All the political parties united in the fight against this dangerous virus. “

Omphile Maotwe of the Economic Freedom Fighters said he was surprised by Steenhuisen’s call.

“This is really concerning and we ask the government to strengthen the country during the shutdown.”
