Ipid investigates fatal shooting in Pinetown crime area

Durban – The Independent Police Directorate of Investigations is poised to investigate a shooting in Pinetown where a subway policeman fatally wounded an alleged kidnapper.

Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola said the investigation process is still in the preliminary stage.

“An investigation officer from Ipid attended the crime scene. The firearm used by the police officer has been taken for ballistic analysis, the date of the autopsy has not yet been determined. The preliminary report will determine the way forward. in this matter, “he said.

Daily News reported that three men surrounded the officer’s car at a known access point in Pinetown.

In video that has been shared with numerous community groups in the Pinetown area, three men are seen running towards a stopped white Ford Bakkie at an intersection on Josiah Gumede Street in Pinetown.

Two of the hijackers run to the driver’s side while the other runs to the passenger side.

The driver’s door is seen opening and one of the men falls to the ground and the other two flew in different directions.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that the men were trying to rob the driver when he shot them.

She said that, at knife point, they tried to steal (the motorist) his cell phone and tried to stab him.

“He suffered a scratch on his hand. He managed to grab his firearm, fired a shot at the suspects, and hit a 35-year-old suspect in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two managed to flee the scene on foot. Two knives were recovered at the scene. Investigation and attempted robbery charges have been opened for investigation at Pinetown SAPS, ”Mbele said.
