The minister appeared before the parliament’s home affairs committee on Tuesday to explain the debacle.
CAPE TOWN – Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said Tuesday that his department was not solely responsible for Shepherd Bushiri’s escape from the country.
Motsoaledi said that several other departments of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Group would also take some responsibility for allowing Bushiri and his wife Mary to flee to Malawi.

The minister appeared before Parliament’s home affairs committee to explain the debacle. He acknowledged that the country’s porous borders make it easy for Bushiri and his wife to go unnoticed.
Motsoaledi confirmed to the deputies that the Bushiris were in the country illegally with fraudulent papers.
The minister said their businesses were also not legally registered.

On how Bushiri managed to skip bail and flee, Motsoaledi said other state agencies had to investigate.
“All those groups and ministers are involved in this Bushiri issue. Therefore, any report that reaches Parliament will come through that group. And coincidentally, throughout yesterday morning, the cluster ministers met and also met with their technical teams, ”said the minister.
However, Motsoaledi has explained to members that there was no evidence to support claims that Bushiri may have left with the Malawian president who was in South Africa on official business.
“The passports matched the photos and faces of the members who were there, and they got on the plane, but before the plane left, it was definitely searched a second time. Having convinced themselves that there was no sign of Mr. and Mrs. Bushiri, the plane was allowed to take off, ”he said.
