Game has launched its first future-ready concept store at the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg.
Innovations being tested in the store include self checkout counters, price check booths, sample vending machines, electronic shelf labels, and free customer Wi-Fi.
In addition, the store will have a children’s play area, interactive demonstration areas in various store categories, and digital touch screens to allow shoppers to access appropriate product information.
A number of new technologies are also being rolled out to this store, including:
- QR codes – Customers can scan to access product information or to buy a product online and receive it.
- ESL – Provides staff with information on factors such as sales rate, days of stock coverage, and location of stock in the warehouse.
- Smart tags – These facilitate the monitoring and management of stocks in warehouses.
- Trackmatic Phase 2 – Allowing Game to track trucks that transport stock, in addition to providing better visibility of the type and volume of stock being transported.
- Smart camera solution – The game will be able to manage the waiting time for customers and protect its stock receiving bays.
“Our new store concept goes beyond providing a modernized look and feel, and rather encapsulates the direction in which we are moving toward our broader change as a business,” said Vice President of Games Andrew Stein.
“We have consulted with a number of key players across the business, conducted extensive customer and market research, and internally reviewed Game’s relevance to the African retail landscape.”
Stein said Game looked at local and international best practices and emerging trends to design its concept store.
“We are making positive progress in our turnaround while staying true to our value proposition for our price-sensitive customers, who expect not only a wide range of products, but also quality, at unbeatable prices,” said Stein.
“While we are testing the Game’s reinvented format with the Mall of Africa store, we plan to roll out two more future-proof stores by the end of the year.
“Along with our other strategic plans, such as the phase-out of Fresh and Frozen from 65 stores by November and the introduction of our clothing range, Styleessentials, in all Game stores by 2021.”
Game also said it will introduce new and expanded categories as part of its turnaround strategy, including clothing, party solutions, parenting, best-selling children’s books, home safety and wellness.
