CAPE TOWN: The process of deciding which districts to move from Tier 4 to Tier 3 closure restrictions will begin on Friday.
Since late May, the government is introducing a district-based approach to closure, depending on the number of COVID-19 cases concentrated in the area.
Authorities say that COVID-19 hot spots have emerged in the Western and Eastern Cape and require specific efforts to trace and trace contacts.
The government is moving away from the general model of national closure and will use a customized district-based approach to ensure that the spread of COVID-19 is kept to an absolute minimum.
Oversight mechanisms will be established to assess how each district monitors compliance with the new closure rules.
Case numbers will be monitored, and the national command council will review the block level by district every two weeks.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said protecting people’s livelihoods was as important as protecting them from COVID-19: “We will meet with our social partners in Nedlac and then we will meet with our provinces and hope to complete the consultations very quickly. We are doing this as well as it should be. “
Ramaphosa said that depending on the length of the consultation process, the level 3 block could be introduced earlier.
Authorities say that if the blockade were not introduced, at least 80,000 South Africans could have been infected with COVID-19 and the death toll in the country could have been eight times higher.
