Batter Raynard van Tonder has been discharged from the Proteas Test team due to injury, Cricket South Africa confirmed on Saturday.

The 22-year-old broke his finger during a team practice session on Friday in preparation for Sunday’s second and final test match against Sri Lanka.

“Raynard van Tonder has been discharged from the Proteas Test team due to a broken finger on his left hand. The injury occurred during the team’s practice session on Friday,” the statement read.

“He will return to his (Knights) franchise for rehab and no replacement will be named for the second and final test match against Sri Lanka from tomorrow.”

Van Tonder has yet to play for the Proteas, but he is considered one of the brightest young prospects in the country today, particularly in red ball cricket.

The Proteas are up 1-0 in the two-game series and will be eager to claim a cover-up when the two sides meet Sunday at Wanderers Stadium.

The match starts at 10:00 AM (SA time).
