One person was shot dead in Braamfontein amid student protests.

IPID investigators have been deployed to determine whether the person killed in Braamfontein on Wednesday morning was shot to death by police.

In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Ndileka Cola said that the Hillbrow police station had notified them of an incident that occurred in Braamfontein on Wednesday morning.

“The management has sent four investigating officers to investigate the allegations, the team will also cordon off the crime scene and carry out the investigation, including the location of the person with the video images, the identification of eyewitnesses, etc.

“Additionally, IPID will ensure that the body is protected and taken safely to the morgue.

“If this incident is within the mandate of IPID, the normal investigation process will take place. When the preliminary investigation is finalized today, the management will provide more details,” Cola said.

News24 previously reported that a person had been shot and killed in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, allegedly by the police.

The incident is believed to have occurred on Wednesday morning as police were attempting to disperse Wits students protesting student funding.

Gauteng Police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele was unable to provide further details, but told Newzroom Afrika that police had been alerted to the body of a middle-aged man in Braamfontein and that relevant stakeholders were in currently on site to further investigate the matter. He did not want to confirm whether it was confirmed that the police fired at the man.

A witness who was waiting at a nearby bus stop spoke to News24 at the scene, on condition of anonymity, shortly after the incident. They said that some students protesting in Braamfontein CBD were taken to a clinic on De Beer Street. While there, the occupants of a nearby nyala fired at protesters.

A man leaving the clinic was injured, the witness said.
