South Africa’s alcohol industry is calling for a review of the renewed ban on alcoholic beverages as soon as possible, and says there are alternative measures to a full ban to address the rise in Covid-19 infections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has banned the sale of alcohol in shops, restaurants and bars until January 15.

Regulations published after the president’s announcement confirmed this, stating: “The sale, dispensing and distribution of liquor for external consumption and for internal consumption is prohibited.”

In addition, the consumption of liquor in public places and “the tasting and sale of liquor to the public by registered wineries is prohibited. wine estates. and other similar establishments registered as micro-manufacturers ”.

The industry said the total ban on all formal liquor sales was of great concern.

“Limits on alcohol sales can be imposed in a less harmful way that alleviates the impact on the health care system, helps mitigate transmission, and at the same time helps preserve livelihoods,” the organization said.

“The alcohol industry seeks a social pact with the government, industry and civil society to continue the vital economic activity of the sector, save companies and jobs and guarantee the safety of its workers, promote responsible trade and consumption alcohol wise ”.
