LONDON – Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, who accused the stewards of trying to prevent him from winning last weekend’s Russian Grand Prix, said on Tuesday he was “just a human being” and would continue to learn.

In what seemed like a veiled apology, but was not directly referring to the Sochi race or the stewards, the Mercedes driver posted a message on Instagram thanking his fans for their support.

“He may not always do well in the face of adversity,” wrote the Brit, who is one victory away from equaling Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91.

“I may not always react the way you want me to when tensions are high, but after all I am human and I am passionate about what I do.

“I am learning and growing every day, I will take my lessons and keep fighting until the next one. Thanks to those who continue to support and are there fighting me.”

Hamilton, a six-time world champion, finished third in Sochi after starting from pole.

He took two penalties, totaling 10 seconds, for practicing wrong-place starts before the race started.

When asked if the punishment seemed excessive, he told Sky Sports: “Of course it is. But that’s to be expected. They’re trying to stop me, aren’t they?”

Race director Michael Masi rejected the allegations after the race.

“If Lewis wants to pick something up like I’ve told him before … the door is always open,” he said.

“We have the commissioners as an independent judiciary to judge … there was a violation and it does not matter if it was Lewis Hamilton or any other of the 19 drivers.”

Formula One motorsports general director Ross Brawn said Monday that Hamilton should lick his wounds and learn from his mistakes.
