‘I’m not going to tell Kaizer Chiefs fans what to do’

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela says Gavin Hunt was the best coach available in the country to take on the mammoth task of coaching Kaizer Chiefs.

Hunt, who will be assisted by Arthur Zwane and Dillion Sheppard, replaced Ernst Middendorp last week in a highly publicized move.

The former Bidvest Wits coach faces the challenge of turning the fortunes of once powerful Chiefs after years of poor performance and embarrassment.

“With the utmost respect, because of the coaches that were available in the country, I don’t think there is anyone more deserving,” Komphela said.

“It’s going to be very interesting in the league next season with him at Chiefs, but first of all I should take the opportunity to congratulate him and wish him all the best.

“He’s a very close friend, make no mistake about it.”

Komphela said Hunt has the pedigree and experience to take over Naturena, where they haven’t been able to land a major trophy for the past five seasons.

“He deserves a chance too and he has the pedigree,” the Arrows coach said.

“I am not going to tell Kaizer Chiefs supporters what to do, I am not going to tell Kaizer Chiefs management what to do.

“But all I can say in terms of football is that perhaps the best way to move forward faster is to move forward with the one you have.

“Because if you want to advance with the one you have behind the previous energy, you complicate things.

“Gavin Hunt is tough skinned, he’s a big kid and he’s been in the league for a long time.

“I just wish it would come in, although there will always be a review and reflection to say ‘But last season’ [where Chiefs were pipped to the post in the final day in 2019-20 by Mamelodi Sundowns].

“There is nothing you can do about the previous season because it no longer exists. They were almost there last season, it was only a matter of 30 minutes and I felt very sorry for Ernst Middendorp.

“Our job is such a thankless job because who could go through that.

“You’re at the top of the record all season and convincingly, you have a double digit gap and then you lose it with 30 minutes to go.

“My man, I still respect him [Middendorp] for the force he portrayed, but listen, that’s part of the game. “
