CAPE TOWN – Shaun-Nick Bester has described in detail how his father, former comrades champion Nick Bester, was attacked during a training run on Sunday morning and had to climb with his hands tied to seek help.

“He said he’s lucky to be alive,” Shaun-Nick said. EWN Sport.

The 60-year-old Ironman athlete was attacked at the Magaliesberg on Sunday morning.

Shaun-Nick confirmed that his father had been transferred from the intensive care unit (ICU) to the upper care unit at a Pretoria hospital on Monday.

Bester suffered broken ribs and a cheekbone before being stripped of his clothes, tied up and left to suffer.

Shaun-Nick detailed his father’s assault. “He went for a morning run / walk on the mountain. He just went out to train. He had his revolver with him because he had been attacked before on a mountain bike about 10 years ago, so he actually had a gun with him. “

“He said that while climbing the mountain, he suddenly felt someone hit him from behind. Then there were three guys around him and they started hitting him with stones on the head. They took the gun from him and then hit him in the eye with the gun. They also took his cell phone and some bank cards. They forced him to give them the pins of the bank accounts. Then they tied him up, took off his pants and left him there on the mountain. ”

Bester then had to scale the mountain while tied up before he could find rescuers. Once at the hospital, on Sunday, he was taken directly to the ICU, but transferred to a higher care facility on Monday morning.

“His cheekbone is broken. The bone over her eye is broken. Three of her ribs are broken. She has many cuts all over her body. He has a head trauma where he was hit with the stones. And he’s basically all bruised and full of cuts, ”Shaun-Nick said.

He said he managed to visit his father in hospital after the assault.

“I was really confused. He said he didn’t hear anyone, that he didn’t see anyone. Suddenly he felt someone hitting rocks behind him. He said he was lucky to be alive. “
