Durban – The KwaZulu Natal MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs has called for steps to be taken to hold those responsible for the illegal power connections that killed three children on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place in the informal settlement of Jika Joe in Pietermaritzburg.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka expressed her shock and sadness at this tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of three innocent lives.
In a statement, the MEC expressed its condolences to the families of the three children.
“This tragic incident takes place at a time when we began the 16 Days of Activism campaign against the abuse of women and children.
“This campaign aims to protect the rights of the most vulnerable within our communities. That our province loses three children in this way is heartbreaking and demands a stand against the dangerous illegal electrical connections that continue to spread in our communities. Those who make and benefit from illegal electrical connections must be held accountable, ”Hlomuka said.
Hlomuka has called on the Msunduzi municipality to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident and hold those responsible for the illegal connections to account.
He also called on the residents of Jika Joe to come forward with any information that can help stop those responsible for the spread of illegal connections.
