- AfriForum claimed on Monday that Senzo Meyiwa was killed in a coup and not in a botched robbery.
- The head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, Gerrie Nel, did not say whether any of the people who had been at Khumalo’s home that day were among those arrested on Monday.
- Meyiwa’s brother Sifiso said he and his family were hopeful that more arrests would be made in connection with the soccer star’s murder.
Senzo Meyiwa’s murder was not a robbery gone wrong, but a murder, the head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit Gerrie Nel said on Monday.
He said the lobby group had received a full report from the police investigation team, whose investigation resulted in five arrests on the sixth anniversary of the soccer star’s murder.
But Nel maintained that there was a prominent aspect of the investigation, such as who gave the murder order?
“If there is a success, there is a mastermind. We are confident and we agree, having examined the evidence, that this is a success,” he said.

Police Minister General Bheki Cele confirmed on Monday the arrests following the murder of goalkeeper Bafana Bafana at the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, actress and musician Kelly Khumalo, on October 26, 2014.
The Meyiwa family turned to AfriForum last year after feeling that the National Tax Authority had not made any progress.
Meyiwa’s brother, Sifiso, at a press conference organized by AfriForum said that he and his family were hopeful that more people would be detained.
Arrested
“Once the brain is arrested, I will be satisfied.”
Nel did not say whether any of the people who had been at Khumalo’s home that day were among those arrested.
However, he agreed with National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Khehla John Sitole that the police had a strong case against the suspects.
Nel, who said he would have been “happy” to process the matter, said he had to be careful not to divulge information that could undermine the police investigation.
“Am I satisfied that the information already obtained by the police indicates who could be the mastermind? My answer should be yes, I think they are on the right track, [based] about the report I have received.
Arrests
“I hope that soon turns into arrests.”
He believed that AfriForum’s involvement along with a change in the investigation team that put a new focus on the case were, among other factors, what led to the breakthrough.
News24 this month revealed that the investigation team had made a breakthrough after finding the firearm that was allegedly used to kill Meyiwa and that they had identified the man who allegedly fired the fatal shots.
A series of reports prepared in July to update senior police officers on the progress of the case showed that investigators had found the murder weapon in a safe at the Cleveland Police Station.
The alleged gunman is in Johannesburg prison serving a 30-year jail sentence for the January 2015 murder of Alexandra’s taxi chief Reggie Mohlala, reports showed. According to the report, the same weapon was used to kill Mohlala.
Nel said the weapon, along with the ballistic evidence, would be one of the most important aspects of the case.
