CAPE TOWN: Unemployed South Africans can apply for the government R350 grant on Monday.

The grant application system was opened starting at noon as part of the government’s COVID-19 aid program for the unemployed.

At a press conference on Monday morning, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu asked stakeholders to be patient as the system is expected to be flooded with applications.

Applicants must be unemployed, over the age of 18 and not receive any other state subsidy.

The government has made various platforms available to unemployed citizens to apply for the grant.

An identification number, first and last name must be provided, along with bank details and the cell phone number.

A home address should also be provided, but those with smartphones can use their GEO locations to make the process easier.

South African Social Security Agency CEO Busisiwe Khambula said: “And in cases where people are employed, we will be able to take the entire database that we have that will go through Sars to check if those people are really unemployed because I know that in many cases people are at risk. “

Khambula said they would be vigilant against fraud and has asked beneficiaries not to turn over their cards to loan sharks.

He also said that the systems will be strengthened to help those without technology.
