I will mold my own players, Hunt says as Chiefs lose transfer ban appeal

Gavin Hunt has admitted that he hoped the Kaizer Chiefs would win his appeal against a two-window transfer ban in order to refresh and strengthen the team.

But all that hope was crushed when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Tuesday afternoon its dismissal of Amakhosi’s appeal, meaning the Naturena-based team cannot sign any new players until at least the next season.

The Chiefs were barred from registering new players for two consecutive transfer periods after they were found to have made a mistake in acquiring Malagasy midfielder Adrianamirado Adrianarimanana in 2018. FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (RDC) determined that Amakhosi should have negotiated the transfer with Fosa Juniors, a team with which Adrianarimanana was signed at the time, and as a forbidden punishment for two transfer windows and a fine of around R650,000 in compensation to Juniors.

When asked about the finality of the matter that Amakhosi had been waiting for, waiting for a positive response after his appeal, Hunt admitted that he hoped to strengthen the team.

Amakhosi already has Sifiso Hlanti training with them without a contract and it is unclear what will happen to him now that the verdict has come out.

“For the last month I’ve been looking at it hoping they won’t turn us down, so we’re going to improve it, and I want to try and improve the team with (new) players,” Hunt said.

He said they have to research what they have on the team and work to move forward.

“Obviously we know that we have certain areas where we lack (competent) players, but it is what it is and we have to move on. So one step forward is trying to mold the players and we will go from there, ”added the former Bidvest Wits coach.
