The National Lottery Commission (NLC) is a trend in social networks. This time not because of a controversial sequence of numbers, but because of an investigation into allegations of fraud and mismanagement.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed Tuesday that it had been granted a search warrant on Monday to raid the NLC offices.
SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told TimesLIVE: “We are asked, through complaints, to investigate malpractice and mismanagement in the commission.”
The accusations include “uillegal, irregular or unapproved acquisitive acts, transactions, measures or practices that affect state property, and intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property ”.
The Sunday Times recently reported that under investigation by the SIU there is a project of a charity, I am made for the glory of God, who received over R11m in funding from the NLC after he promised to build a cricket ground, tennis courts, soccer and rugby fields and volleyball and basketball courts in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.
Community member Amos Mafumo told the publication that the organization only painted the grandstand, which was built in 2014. He said the organization painted and left without paying the workers.
He said the community is not aware of the organization and that the stadium has not been used in years.
On Twitter, many have welcomed the investigation and asked the SIU to hold the people involved accountable.
And while the unit didn’t mention the link between the recent controversial winning sequence of numbers and the investigation, Twitter users still blatantly question it.
These are some of the reactions:
