Itumeleng Khune has described their friendship and rivalry, and the dreams they had when they were young, with Senzo Meyiwa from his time in the youth national teams as a tombstone for the late Bafana Bafana captain who was unveiled in Chesterville, Durban on Tuesday.
Khune’s national team, star of Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates’ friend and goalie competitor, Meyiwa, was killed in Vosloorus on October 26, 2014.
“I have a lot to share about my life with Senzo, but I will try to summarize everything,” Khune said at another ceremony at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“… I think when we met we were 15 years old and we were like, ‘We want to take over as goalkeepers for the national team.’ We also wanted to be in the [Soweto] derby, the match between Chiefs and Pirates, one of the best derbies.
“… So we pushed each other from the U-17. I remember we were playing in an interprovincial tournament in Polokwane sponsored by Coca-Cola, when Senzo and I were chosen to represent Gauteng.
“The coach was confused about who to play as his number one. … If I had the means, I could have taken half of me and half of Senzo and made it one. And yes, it was not possible, but we managed to play three games each and we did well and we had a clean sheet.
“We went all the way to beat the goalkeeper of the tournament. They also called us to the U-17 national team and when we got there we also gave the coach the tension about who was going to be number 1.
“This is how our friendship, our rivalry and competition began. From the U-17 we went to the U-20 and also to the U-23 ”.
Khune said such puzzles continued as he and Meyiwa progressed through the age groups.
