Cape Town – A mother was called to the gruesome scene where her gangster son was stoned to death on Saturday morning.

Monray Phillips’ body was found near the junction along Duinefontein Road in Manenberg.

The 27-year-old, who was last seen around 7 a.m., did not tell his mother Bonita, 53, where he was going.

“He brushed his teeth and came to see how I was in my room, then he left,” says Mom.

“It was about 10 minutes after he left when someone came to tell me that my son had been murdered.”

Although she admits that her son was a gangster, Bonita doesn’t know why anyone would want to kill Monray.

“I don’t know why they killed him, but I know that he didn’t rob people,” he says.

“He was such a nice guy that he never refused when people asked him to run errands.

“He was a gangster and a member of Hard Livings, but this was not gang related.

“I’m left with questions, but nothing will change because he is no longer here.”

She says that Monray was a “mother’s son”: “I think that’s why he never married or had children because he didn’t want to leave home and live alone.

“I will really miss him, his absence will be felt.”

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says a murder case has been opened.

“Manenberg Police are investigating a murder case after a bystander found the body of a 27-year-old man on Saturday morning at around 7:50 am in front of a gas station on Duinefontein Road, Manenberg.

“The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.”
