JOHANNESBURG – Former Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said Thursday that her memory has been altered by evidence presented to the state capture commission and has backtracked on her claims that Bosasa did not attend her 40th birthday party.
She has admitted that her 40th birthday, and not her 50th, was held at the Victorian guesthouse, after owner Hendrik Coetzee similarly admitted to the investigation.
Mokonyane previously denied that Bosasa was paying for the party, but now said he couldn’t know who covered the costs.
She said that the event was supposed to be a small dinner, but when she arrived, she realized that a surprise party had been organized for her.
Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo asked how he can remember attending other events at the guesthouse, but he said nothing about his party.
Mokonyane said his intention was never to mislead the commission: “Therefore, I have come and made this presentation having read first before even obtaining the commission’s evidence.”
