PRETORIA – Self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri says he did nothing wrong.

Bushiri, his wife, Mary, and a member of his church, Landiwe Ntlokwana, appeared in Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday to request bail.

The trio has been accused of fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Law on Prevention of Organized Crime, for an amount of R102 million. They were arrested earlier this week.

Bushiri supporters went to court in large numbers to show their support.

The Bushiri intend to plead not guilty to all charges, claiming that they have not yet been told exactly what they have done wrong.

During their request for bail, their lawyer Anneline van Den Heever told the court that they should be released on bail, stating that they have no prior convictions and that they do not intend to evade trial as they own property in South Africa.

They will spend the weekend in Kgosi Mampuru prison and are due to return to court on Monday, when the state is expected to respond to the defense.
