I did not know who had paid for the safety improvements in my homes.

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe on Friday came under the spotlight from the Zondo commission on why it had accepted free installations in the amount of R300,000 from controversial facilities management company Bosasa in 2013 and 2016.

Former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi testified before the commission that Bosasa had targeted influential politicians and officials and given them favors, including bribes and home improvements, among other perks.

Agrizzi told the investigation that Bosasa had installed security improvements at three of the Mantashe properties.

Mantashe said he had commissioned his security adviser Mzonke Nyakaza to install cameras at his Boksburg home after robbery attempts and that it was he who secured Papa Leshabane’s cameras from Bosasa without Mantashe’s intimate knowledge.

“In the political sphere, there is a very strict division of labor. They pulled out the details of the security arrangements and the security advisor handled that aspect himself, ”Mantashe said.

However, the lead advocate for the evidence, Viwe Notshe SC, asked Mantashe why his properties in the Eastern Cape also had Bosasa security facilities.

Mantashe said the Eastern Cape security improvements were “informed by the success of the Boksburg facility.”

“The installations were made in the Eastern Cape in 2016, having seen the effectiveness of the cameras in Boksburg where we even found a person who was stealing from the inside, who is working on the property. We think we should also put those cameras on those properties, ”argued Mantashe.
