Perhaps no one has exemplified the Warholian adage of ’15 minutes of fame ‘more fully than Olpha Selepe, known for just over a month as the overnight phenomenon Gee Six Five.

His niece Sbu Mpungose, a former editor of Cosmopolitan, Bona and True Love, confirmed the death of her aunt early Wednesday morning.

Born at Emadadeni in Newcastle, KZN, the former teacher completed her master’s degree at age 60 and was pursuing her PhD in higher education. She expressed that while she had made attempts in the music industry before, through gospel, this album was something unique.

“I have to apologize to my fans,” he told Vibe FM. “But this project is a unique project. I have a reason for this. I already did what I dreamed of. Now, I am making room for others.”
