New Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has said he wants play star Khama Billiat to “play in the right areas” to bring the underperforming Zimbabwean star back to his best.
Hunt said that if he can pull it off, Billiat, with his 30-year experience, should now be a double-digit scorer in the DStv Premiership.
Billiat, a key figure in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2016 Caf Champions League success, scored just two goals and was notably below par for Hunt’s predecessor at Chiefs, Ernst Middendorp, with constant speculation and reports that the two did not. they agreed.
“I have high expectations. I know him from Zimbabwe to Ajax [Cape Town]‚” Hunt said at a pregame press conference Thursday for the Chiefs’ 2020-21 season kickoff in Sunday’s MTN8 quarterfinal against Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium.
“Yes, he is older, but he should have a little more experience now, he is a little wiser.
“I think the most important thing I have to do or we have to do is to start him playing to his strengths.
“Where we can get the best of him. And that’s all I’m going to try to do.
Whatever you need. Support ‚extra work. If you’re willing, and I think you’re willing, I think you still have great potential.
“I still see him as a child when he came from Zimbabwe. Now he is a little older.
“But we have to make him play to his strengths, and that means the right areas of the field.
“I don’t want to know what has happened here before. It has nothing to do with me.
“I just want to see what’s in front of me and hopefully we can catch him… he’s certainly a double-digit scorer in the league, and that should be the first goal.
“If he does his part, the rest of us can do our part, and then we succeed.”
Middendorp led the Chiefs to second place last season, losing the Premiership to the Sundowns on the final day in early September of the Covid-19 affective campaign.
Amakhosi chose not to continue with the German manager, and Hunt’s availability following the Bidvest Wits sale saw him appointed to Naturena.
