Hunt, Kaizer Chiefs coach: there’s your problem

The Glamor Boys are really fighting for goals this season, further highlighting the absence of last season’s top scorer for the Soweto giants.

It was another frustrating night for Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt as his team drew 0-0 against Premier Soccer League (PSL) newcomers TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was the Glamor Boys’ third league game of the season and also the third time they failed to hit the net. This followed a 3-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and a 1-0 win over Chippa United, which was courtesy of an own goal by Gregory Damons.

Against the Galaxy, the Chiefs had their chances, but they lacked a cool, collected head in the opposition area as players like Lebogang Manyama, Khama Billiat, Bernard Parker and Leonardo Castro continue to shoot blanks.

The only man who could be saving those chances, based on the 13 he scored in the league last season, is the injured Serbian shooter Samir Nurkovic.

“Last year [Chiefs] he scored 48 goals, 23 on set pieces, “Hunt said. SuperSport TV after the game when asked about his team’s failure to capitalize on a series of free throws they won against the Galaxy.

“You can see why: the top scorer [Nurkovic] obviously not playing. I think he scored half of them [the set-piece goals]. So there is your problem. Incredible opportunities, you have to take advantage of them.

“He’s the guy who scored most of them last season, not playing, so that’s a problem and he won’t be ready for another two or three months.

The Chiefs coach at least felt like his team finished the game on the front foot, which may be a good thing with Sunday’s second leg of the MTN8 semifinals against Orlando Pirates looming. The bosses have a deficit of three goals to cancel.

“The longer the game went on, I thought we got stronger,” Hunt said. “But certainly, overall, what we got out of the group. That’s all we can do, get the most out of the group in every game. That’s all I can do.”
