Johannesburg – A botched theft of cash in transit in Sebokeng on Monday morning around 10 am left a security guard and a passerby injured and two vehicles burned.

The gunmen, who left without taking a penny from the burning van, fled the scene on foot.

Police spokesman Col. Athlenda Mathe said the cashier van was about to load money from a Standard Bank ATM when a security guard noticed a vehicle trying to block its path.

Mathe said the cash van driver managed to escape the Toyota Camry by blocking his path and a chase ensued.

During the chase, Mathe said, the gunmen shot the wheels of the cash van and paralyzed it.

“The crew was ejected from the cash van and the guard was shot in the right hand, as well as an innocent bystander.”

Mathe said both guards were disarmed by the gunmen who twice tried to blow up the cash van but were unable to obtain the money.

“We can confirm that the police have recovered a rifle and 9mm cartridges at the scene, as well as the Toyota Camry… We also found a white Mazda Midge that was burned to the ground. We cannot confirm whether it belongs to an innocent bystander or to the gunmen. “

Mathe said the gunmen had also fired at the van’s escort vehicle. However, no one was injured.

“A search is underway for an unknown number of people, and we urge anyone with information to come forward to help with our work by calling the Crime Line on 08600 10111,” he said.

In another incident that occurred in Cape Town around the same time, a security guard was shot during another failed cash-in-transit robbery at the Colorado Mall in Mitchell’s Plain.

Mathe said two guards were about to load cash into their vehicle when they were accosted by three suspects.

He said a fight broke out between the guards and the gunmen. Amid the chaos, one of the guards was shot in the neck.

“They took him to the hospital in critical condition. The community played an important role in the capture of the suspects, as it did so with the citizen arrest of the three suspects who have now been detained.

“The armed men did not take money,” he said.
